European Food Store opened in 2011 on Santa Rosa Avenue with a simple idea: the food you grew up with should not be three states away. Fifteen years on, the shelves run from German rye bread and Polish kielbasa to Latvian smoked sprats, Turkish delight, and the sweets and preserves people remember from home — the brands families ask for by name, not the near-enough substitutes.

We are a real shop with a counter, not a warehouse. Our German bread comes in from Germany and is baked in our own oven every day. There is a deli counter making sandwiches to order, and fresh black and red caviar in the case. Walk in at 2790 Santa Rosa Avenue, ask what the good sausage is this week, and you will get an honest answer.

Customers across Sonoma County and the North Bay come to us for the bread and the deli counter; customers across the country order the pantry goods online. Eleven countries are represented on the shelves, and new arrivals land most weeks. Shelf-stable goods — tinned fish, crispbread, tea, coffee, honey, pasta — ship anywhere in the United States. Chocolate and other things that suffer in a hot truck travel to California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada and Arizona, and in the hottest weeks we will get in touch about insulated packaging before a box goes out.
